Review on New Street Grill
New Street Grill is the latest venture from the successful D & D restaurant group, located within Devonshire Square, on the pedestrianised street from which the restaurant takes its name. Just minutes from Liverpool Street Station, it is set within the Old Bengal Warehouse built by the East India Company, said to be the City's oldest surviving warehouse. The venue has an outside walled terrace and is divided into two rooms with luxurious leather banquettes, rich toned wooden chairs and tables laid with pretty vases of roses, exposed brick walls and interesting artwork displayed from nearby Hoxton Art Gallery.
The emphasis in on a re-invented traditional British Grill restaurant showcasing superior cuts of meat, with a real feel for the seasons and a modern flair. Impeccable ingredients are carefully sourced and there's a real dedication to local produce and rare breeds including Gloucester Old Spot, with fish supplied daily from sustainable day-catch fishermen. Exceptional steaks and joints of meat are expertly grilled in the wood-fired Josper oven imparting a unique flavour to the dishes. Starters of seared scallops, black pudding and samphire or hand cut steak tartar and toast are followed by main courses of rump of Colne Valley lamb, royal kidney potatoes, leeks and thyme or grilled native lobster, garlic butter, triple cooked chips. For dessert you could choose a classic Bramley apple pie and custard or maybe blackberry and port jelly paired with Ivy Farm cream.
The wine list is a majestic 300-bin tome knowledgeable garnered from all corners of the world with a focus on reds to complement the meat menu. Sitting alongside New Street Grill is the Old Bengal Bar offering light lunchtime snacks and well crafted signature cocktails. D & D also have a Wine Shop offering more than 600 bins of quality, rare and fine wines with a special emphasis on Bordeaux and Burgundies and a menu of light bites, including charcuterie, cheese and olives, to complement the wines.
