Review on Vennell's Restaurant
For more than 20 years, the Floodlite was a beacon in Masham, but in summer 2005 David Flood decided to swap the kitchen for the garden and turned off the power (in a manner of speaking!).
Enter John Vennell, a savvy chef who made his name at Haley's in Leeds. The new regime started to generate rave reviews, and the cooking certainly made a real impact. Menus are concise, with generally four choices at each stage. To begin, there might be carpaccio of venison and foie gras with truffle vinaigrette as well as an assiette of salmon with raisin and caper confit. To follow, the choice might be between pan-fried monkfish with mussel risotto and squash purée and confit of pork with braised tongue, sweetcorn couscous and apple velouté.
To finish, you could opt for warm chocolate fondant with white chocolate sorbet, Grand Marnier pannacotta with orange sauce or a plate of five Yorkshire cheeses. Everything comes with an affordable price tag, and the wine list is just the ticket.
