Review on Linden Hall Hotel, The Dobson Restaurant
A mightily impressive Georgian mansion, dating from 1812 and designed by Sir Charles Monck and John Dobson (the architect responsible for many of Newcastle's finest buildings). It stands in 450 acres of park and woodland with its own golf course and stunning views of the Northumberland countryside.
The Dobson Restaurant, which overlooks the grounds, is the setting for formal meals based on top-notch ingredients. Starters might range from tart Tatin of scallops, smoked salmon and king prawns with fresh lime and dill to confit of guinea fowl with pak choi, spring onions and ginger. A refreshing sorbet precedes main courses such as braised oxtail with root vegetables, fondant potato and crispy bacon or an assiette of local seafood with black pudding, crushed potatoes and crispy leeks.
Desserts cover everything from hot sticky toffee pudding and butterscotch sauce to Earl Grey iced sorbet accompanied by a pool of mint syrup.
In the grounds of the hotel is the Linden Tree, a casual, custom-built pub offering real ales and more robust food along the lines of grilled salmon and braised lamb shank.
