Review on The Old Coastguard Hotel
Set in glorious sub-tropical gardens leading down to a rocky beach and the sea, the Old Coastguard Hotel is the hub of Mousehole. All around are panoramic views of Mounts Bay, and Penzance is just a short drive away.
Most fish is procured from Newlyn, although live lobsters are bought direct from the Mousehole boats; meat is from a farm and butchery near Redruth, potatoes are dug nearby, and even the real ale is brewed in Cornwall.
Cornish cheese platters, sandwiches and dishes such as smoked chicken Caesar salad are the order of the day at lunchtime. In the evening, the kitchen rolls up its sleeves for more challenging ideas including steamed fillets of plaice and sea bass with brandade cake and red wine sauce, roast skate with buttered spinach, wild mushroom and leek fondue, and boeuf bourguignon. The curtain may come down with praline and caramel parfait or chocolate torte with pistachio ice cream.
