Review on The Café at Porlock Weir
In July 2011 Andrew's on the Weir rebranded its multi-award winning restaurant to a more relaxed, informal style and is now called The Café at Porlock Weir. Sandwiched between Exmoor and the sea, Porlock Weir is a truly delightful haven and it makes a heaven-sent setting for Andrew and Sarah Dixon's yellow-painted restaurant-with-rooms. The pristine Georgian villa stands right by the water's edge, overlooking Porlock Bay, and it has been fitted out in classic country house style.
There are pleasing views from the windows of the two neatly appointed dining rooms, which are decorated in shades of terracotta and gold. The kitchen is still keen to source local produce wherever possible for its dishes such as Native oysters, natural with shallot and red wine vinegar, followed by a main course of braised beef with root vegetables, creamed potatoes and red wine. There's a choice of skilfully crafted desserts which could include warm chocolate brownie, mascarpone and orange cream, Grand Marnier custard or maybe vanilla pannacotta, poached rhubarb and cardamom syrup.
The wine list has some decent global selections at a fair price and the service team led by wife Sarah is both friendly and efficient. Should you decide to extend your stay in this lovely area, there are five rooms available.
