Review on The Fox

The Fox in Shoreditch is a classic City gastropub offering drinks and food in equal measure. Those with a thirst tend to congregate in the ground-floor bar, while others head upstairs to the 'Dining Room', where the short daily menu is given over to straightforward dishes with some Mediterranean overtones.

To start, there' s generally a soup like red onion with Parmesan or lentil and lemon, otherwise open your account with something like pickled herrings and beetroot. Main courses are big-flavoured ideas like veal chop with sage polenta, sea bass with purple sprouting broccoli or rack of lamb with fennel and anchovies.

There's always enough for vegetarians (asparagus with hollandaise in puff pastry, for example), while desserts have included pear and almond tart and pannacotta with rhubarb. Charles Wells Bombardier is on hand pump and there are some drinkable wines by the glass.
