Review on Porthgwidden Beach Café
Younger sister to the nearby Porthminster Café, and run along very similar lines, this trendy beach hangout is an all-day set-up providing everything from breakfast with all sorts of coffee to fully blown evening meals. During the day it operates as an upbeat seaside cafe – but don't expect sandwiches, tea in plastic cups or kiss-me-quick snacks: instead, it's a roll call of unusual pasta, salads (perhaps roast beetroot with red onion and Feta) and dishes like char-grilled steak with Gruyère cheese butter.
This may be deepest Cornwall, but other coasts – especially The Med and Pacific – come to mind when you look at the dinner menu. Jump on board and jet your way around the globe for shredded duck salad with taramind-glazed pumpkin, lychee and fine bean salad or chick pea and artichoke falafels, as well as white chocolate and honey brûlée with apricot compote.
Locally landed seafood tops the bill – perhaps grilled scallops with cauliflower purée, crisp prosciutto, rocket and black truffle oil, Szechuan peppered squid, or line-caught sea bass with celeriac and Parmesan mash, wild mushroom butter and roasted olives. Backing up the food is a sizeable drinks list for young and old alike.
