Built in Victorian style on site of an old hospital, this contemporary hotel is just a walk away from Stratford's tourist attractions and the River Avon. Formal meals are served in the stylishly decorated Quills Restaurant, where calm colour schemes and smooth service create a genuinely relaxed mood.

The kitchen works to a broad international menu that embraces 'home comforts' (Cumberland sausages with bubble 'n' squeak), European classics (braised duck with spiced red cabbage and Puy lentils) and a smattering of eclectic ideas (Cajun salmon with stir-fried vegetables, noodles, tomato and avocado salsa). To finish, try warm chocolate tart with whisky cream or iced Baileys parfait.

Alternatively, opt for something more casual in the lounge bar, where leather sofas, a chiming clock and an ornate fireplace add to the traditional atmosphere; the menu ranges from fishcakes to Caesar salad.
