Review on The Masons Arms
Easily found alongside the A361 between Chipping Norton and Banbury, the chic, stone-built Masons Arms was indeed a Masonic lodge before becoming a hostelry. These days it is in the capable hands of Jamie Bailey who mans the stoves and his partner Louise.
Locally sourced ingredients provide most of the building blocks for the fixed-price lunch menu and the a la carte dinner menu, which are topped up with an assortment of daily specials.
Earthy old-fashioned cuts including shin of beef, pork belly, ox tongue and pig's cheeks show up regularly alongside more eclectic ideas such as timbale of crab with avocado parfait, char-grilled rump of lamb with artichoke purée, cannellini beans and Feta. As for desserts, think chocolate cup with cherry ice cream, mandarin crème brûlée or Bakewell tart. An old wardrobe stacked with wine bottles catches the eye, and the list provides sound drinking from reliable sources.
