Review on The Wensleydale Heifer
A fine old coaching inn dating back to 1643, the Wensleydale Heifer has evolved over the centuries and now does duty as one of the Yorkshire Dales' most notable boutique hotels. The whitewashed stone exterior is virtually unchanged, although the place now boasts a sculptured garden and attractive decking area for al fresco meals.
Despite the bovine name, fish is the Heifer's forte (it was named English Seafish Pub of the Year 2007 by the AA) and visitors can choose to eat in the main dining room with its chocolate brown leather chairs and original artwork or enjoy something more casual in the 'fish bar' (where rattan chairs and seagrass flooring set the tone). The kitchen delivers upbeat dishes and re-worked classics including - say - chilli salt squid with marinated fennel and French bean salad, roast Whitby cod with goats' cheese, Parma ham and tomato fondue or whole baked sea bream with crab and caper butter, as well as fish pie and lobster salad.
Meat from the Dales' most renowned butchers also shows up favourably in dishes such as slow-braised shoulder of West Burton lamb with rosemary mash, grilled aubergine and red pepper jus, while desserts ('the best bits', according to the menu) could range from banana and passion fruit parfait to roasted peanut and caramel 'snickerbocker glory'. Note that light food is available throughout the afternoon at weekends.
