Review on La Fougère Restaurant, Knockranny House Hotel
At first glance, this luxury hotel may look almost Victorian, but inside it is deluxe modernity personified, with fine facilities, a destination spa and spacious rooms. It stands above Westport, with excellent views over the town towards Clew Bay and Croach Patrick. Fine dining takes place in 'La Fougère', an elegant, classical dining room with windows providing an panoramic prospect of the scene.
The hotel has its own smokehouse for salmon and chicken, and there is also plenty of homegrown and local produce on show. To start, a broth of Clew Bay clams, mussels and tomatoes with Kilkeel crab dumplings, horseradish cream and crispy leeks should hit the target, before roast pork tenderloin on organic pearl barley and chanterelle ragoût or a special such as seared Atlantic brill in scallop and sweet potato hash with Vermouth cream. Desserts offer elaborate surprises in the shape of, say, croustade of Granny Smith apple and coconut served with pineapple sorbet and sauce anglaise.
A new walk-through wine cellar is attached to the dining room, providing access to the impressive collection of more than 250 serious wines. France and Italy are the main strengths, but there is fine drinking across the range.
