Review on The White Post

Brett Sutton was the recipient of many awards and accolades during his tenure at The Eastbury in Sherborne where he was Executive Chef for eight years, but he is now flying solo with the launch of his first venture, The White Post on the outskirts of the village of Rimpton. In a tranquil rural farmland setting on the crossroads of the B3148 between Sherborne and Marston Magna, the White Post is the only public house in the country to have the county borders of Dorset and Somerset running through the bar.

The venue has been updated on clean and uncluttered lines, creating a light and airy spaciousness to make the most of the stunning views across the Sparkford Vale towards Glastonbury Tor. There's also a comfortable lounge area with leather sofas, perfect for a pre-dinner aperitif while you peruse the menu. During summer months the outdoor decked terrace and lawned seating area really comes into its own for idyllic al fresco dining.

Brett creates imaginative and stylish dishes forged with classical technique and modern practises based around sound local ingredients, some of which he has foraged from the surrounding countryside. To start who could resist piggy-nibbles pulled pork, honey glazed banger, red wine poached chorizo, crackling, pork belly nugget, apple and ale chutney or roasted scallops, hogs pudding, peas, cider syrup and red wine. There's much to enjoy when it comes to the main courses as well, witness whole roasted sole, seaweed and shrimp butter, Cornish new potatoes, samphire, with flowers and herbs picked fresh from their garden. Carnivores might opt for Dorset lamb 3 ways, roasted, skewer and croquette, tender stem broccoli, heritage carrots, peas and roast lamb bone sauce. Tempting desserts close the show with dark chocolate fondant, caramel sauce, latte ice cream and caramel nibs or cardamom crème brulee, rose petal, pistachio and orange tuile.

There's a concise wine list to complement the food with an excellent selection of local cask ales and draft beers on offer. Service led by Brett's wife Kelly and her team is notably friendly, professional and welcoming. The White Post has three rooms should you wish to extend your visit and explore the surrounding area.
