Review on Verveine Restaurant
Set in the quintessentially English seaside village of Milford on Sea, just three miles west along the coast from Lymington, Hampshire, Verveine is an award winning seafood restaurant. With an entry in the Michelin Guide, as well as the recipient of two AA Rosettes, Chef/Patron David Wykes, Hampshire Chef of the Year for both 2011 and 2012, has now been honoured in the Top 100 UK restaurants list compiled by The Sunday Times in association with Harden's. Verveine has it's own fishmongers at the front leading to the charming intimate dining room towards the rear of the premises, part of which is overlooked by the open kitchen.
David opened his restaurant in 2010 having earned his culinary stripes at critically acclaimed restaurants such as Bath Place Hotel, as well as several French Michelin starred restaurants including L'Univers, Les Viviers, Auberge D'Azur, Restaurant Jules Albert and the world renowned Restaurant Chantecler at the Hotel Negresco in Nice.
Ultra-fresh seafood is treated with impeccable technique and is beautifully displayed on the plate with immaculate attention to detail. Inventive menus kick off with starters in the shape of local lobster, Serrano ham, passion fruit and white chocolate or pressed octopus, mussels, Campari, fennel and blood orange. Follow on with a main course of scallop "coq au vin", fondant potatoes and air dried ham or meat fans might choose the slow cooked suckling pig belly, artichokes and burnt apple puree. Proceedings conclude in style with desserts of Valrhona chocolate, burnt chocolate, tonka and pistachio or quince, spiced cake, bergamot, lemon and honey.
Service is delightful and friendly and the food is accompanied by a well-thought out wine list with plenty of options available by the glass, including a white wine from the local Danebury Vineyards.
