Review on Lough Erne Resort, The Catalina Restaurant

The Catalina is the showpiece restaurant set in the Lough Erne Resort, the first AA and NITB Five Star Hotel in Northern Ireland and awarded 'Best Hotel' at the 2011 Northern Ireland Tourism Awards. The hotel has top-class facilities and shot to fame when it played host to the G8 Summit in 2013. It also has two championship golf courses including the Faldo Course and has been selected to play host to the 2017 Irish Open.

Commanding panoramic views, the resort is set on its own 600 acre peninsula, between Castle Hume Lough and Lower Lough Erne, just outside Enniskillen. The Catalina Restaurant takes its name from the World War II seaplanes that were based on the Lough and are depicted in framed photos on the walls. A light and airy space with vaulted ceilings and arched windows offering spectacular vistas over the lake, tables are smartly laid with linen and swagged drapes offer a classic refinement to the room.

Awarded three prestigious AA Rosettes, leading the kitchen is acclaimed Executive chef Noel McMeel, who presents a modern Irish menu featuring classic and contemporary dishes with a strong allegiance to local produce. Open your account with curried Liscannor crab, roasted cauliflower, golden raisin, mango and coriander or Telfords belly of pork, butternut and maple puree, grilled scallions and Shimeji mushrooms. Main courses take in Noel's signature dish of Lough Erne pork which reflects the very best of local produce from Pat O'Doherty's or fish fans might prefer the pan fried fillet of Blackrock Stone Bass, watercress veloute, potato and violet mustard. Perfectly executed desserts are a fitting finale, witness raspberry soufflé and white chocolate custard or rum and raisin parfait, hazelnut tuile, raison puree and custard foam.

The wine list makes enticing reading created in association with Northern Ireland's only female Master of Wine, Jane Boyce.

Lough Erne Resort also offers alternative dining experiences, The Blaney Bar with an exclusive collection of 101 Irish Whiskies and a grazing menu, The Loughside Bar & Grill, a casual all-day dining option with prime Irish meats from the grill and The Garden Hall where you can enjoy Afternoon Tea.
