Review on Tamarind Kitchen
On the site that once housed Imli Street, Tamarind Kitchen Indian restaurant was launched in April 2017, the younger sibling to the critically acclaimed Michelin-starred Tamarind in Mayfair, as well as Zaika in Kensington. Split over two floors the venue has undergone a makeover by Russell Sage Studios, resulting in a sultry lit venue with rustic marble tables, intimate booths and intricately carved dark wood panelling.
The kitchen offers a modern interpretation of Moghul cuisine in the form of sharing plates, that can be enjoyed in a more laid-back environment than its older brother. Karara kekda, crispy soft shell crab with potato, turmeric, yoghurt salad and homemade pickles is a popular choice, as well as the trio of chicken, featuring a medley of tandoori chicken supreme with chilli, cream cheese and pickling spices. Other options worth considering for fish fans would be the South Indian cobia fish curry flavoured with tamarind, mustard and curry leaves, while meat eaters might opt for the slow-cooked lamb shank in a browned onion sauce flavoured with Andhra chilli and cardamom. Make sure you leave room for one of their delicious desserts such as the chocolate bomb, chocolate mousse encased in a chocolate shell with strawberry shortcake and strawberry sorbet or the baked dark chocolate and cashew nut brownie served with vanilla ice cream.
There's a carefully compiled wine list to complement the food, together with Indian beer, cocktails, tea from the Rare Tea Company and herbal infusions.
