Review on Zala Levantine Grill
April 2017 saw the arrival of Zala Levantine Grill in the West Yard of KERB Camden Market, just a few minutes walk from Camden Town Station. The former chef of R'amas Kitchen in Jerusalem Tomer Niv, who has also worked in the acclaimed kitchens of Michelin-starred The Fat Duck and The Ledbury has teamed up with his brother-in-law Alon Shamir to open this new venture. Occupying a converted unit space, the high-ceilinged space features a hand painted décor with the use of natural wood and exposed brick walls. Tables and chairs are simple in design with further seating outside for al fresco dining.
Niv has appointed Greek chef Stefanos Avdis to head Zala having previously sharpened his knives in the Street Kitchen, The Greek Larder and Princi. Taking centre stage in the kitchen is a traditional wood-fired Taboon oven where Levantine pizzas and pitas are cooked. Complimentary small taster meze plates open the show, before vibrant dishes such as slow cooked lamb shoulder, roasted in amber sauce on a bed of herbs or for those who prefer fish there's baked sea bream, herbs, tomatoes, lemon and olive oil. For a sweet-toothed finale there's coriander seed and apple malabi or red fruit with date baklawa.
