Cornerstone launched in April 2018, just around the corner from Hackney Wick train station in East London and not far from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. It's the first solo venture from Tom Brown, the former Head Chef of Knightsbridge's Michelin-starred Outlaw's at The Capital and it's named after his favourite Arctic Monkeys track.

The interiors of the new-build set on the the corner of Prince Edward Road have been created by the local firm of Holland Harvey Architects. A pared back space with a central open kitchen with counter seating, there's a 5000-year-old oak table salvaged from a river in Croatia. There's also some nice features from his late grandmother's house such as the big grandfather clock occupying a corner of the room, an old writing desk which now serves as the waiter's station and some cacti from her conservatory.

The kitchen focuses on a regularly changing menu of dishes designed for sharing with produce sourced from trusted suppliers. Given Tom's background it's no surprise that fish shows up strongly witness raw scallops, roast chicken dressing, tarragon and mushrooms or beetroot cured Grey Mullet, pickle beetroot, dill and salad cream. For those who have a preference for meat there's offerings such as chicken liver croquettes and devilled mayonnaise or maybe duck leg scrumpet, chicory ketchup, orange and smoked almonds. Round things off with pear crumble and Earl Grey ice cream or chocolate mousse, peanuts, lime and stout.

The concise wine list emphasises natural, organic and biodynamic producers with plenty of options available by the glass. Cornerstone also has a bespoke gin made exclusively for the restaurant from Cornish distillery, The Wrecking Coast which has been designed to complement seafood. In 2019 the restaurant was awarded three prestigious AA Rosettes.
