Review on Gabeto Cantina
Gabeto Cantina is a lively addition to Camden Town, a vast restaurant, bar and terrace housed in a renovated Victorian stable block. The project was undertaken by Monza Contractors, who have created a vibrant space with a ground floor bar area serving breakfast and snacks, with an industrial-style spiral staircase leading to the first floor restaurant. Retaining elegant period features, exposed brick walls display a set of bespoke murals from artist John Bulley, who was responsible for the famous Camden Lock bridge. Dining booths are set with eclectic furniture, and a brightly coloured cube incorporating lighting rods hangs from the high vaulted wooden ceiling.
Leading the kitchen is Lee Andrews, who previously worked at Nuno Mendes' well regarded Chiltern Firehouse in Marylebone. He presents a British brasserie style menu with Latin influences, featuring small plates, nachos, tacos, burgers and salads, alongside grilled meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes. Plaice goujons are served with mustard lemon mayonnaise, while chicken goujons come with a coconut chilli sauce. Elsewhere, there's rib-eye chimichurri with house salad or from the sea grilled salmon, poached asparagus, chipotle butter and crème fraiche. To finish order the passionfruit cheesecake with dark rum summer berry compote and pistachios or the Gabeto mess, meringue, strawberries, Chantilly and toffee sauce.
Gabeto Cantina has live music and DJ's, as well as signature cocktails and a wine list from mixologist Tony Safqui.
