Review on Parker's Tavern

Parker's Tavern was launched in August 2018, a stand-alone destination restaurant set within Cambridge's most iconic hotel, the University Arms that has re-opened after an extensive refurbishment which cost a reportedly £80 million. Steeped in history, it first opened for business in 1834 as a stopping point for coaching passengers on the way to London, who were looking for refreshment and a room at the University Arms.

The interiors are a collaboration between the well-regarded architect John Simpson, known for his work on both Buckingham and Kensington Palaces and the internationally acclaimed Swedish designer Martin Brudnizki. The tavern is named after the overlooking Parker's Piece, an open space in the heart of Cambridge used for sporting events, which is also named after Edward Porter, a cook that is said to have been the city's first restaurateur in the 17th century. The décor pays homage to the building's history and Cambridge's heritage, with a nod to the university's grand dining halls featuring Cambridge Blue wall panelling and original stained glass windows with crest detailing. Walls are adorned with contemporary artwork and burnt orange and blue velvet chairs and red chesterfields are set against dark wood tables on herringbone wood flooring.

Award-winning East Anglian born chef Tristian Welch takes the reins of the kitchen, having made his name at esteemed restaurants such as Le Gavroche, Gordon Ramsay's Petrus and Launceston Place. He showcases a brasserie style British menu with a focus on the finest seasonal produce. Among the list of starters you might find hand dived scallops cooked in their shell with coastal herbs or from the land Coronation chicken, butter lettuce, almonds, grilled apricots and curried dressing. Main courses also provide ample choice with roast suckling pig, braised fennel and cooking juices or charcoal grilled Norfolk lobster with garlic butter and fine herbs. Desserts are in keeping, witness Duke of Cambridge tart or Cambridge burnt cream.

The bar serves a comprehensive wine list that offers a good spread of well chosen bottles from around the globe, together with an assured cocktail menu.
