Review on Gunpowder Tower Bridge
Harneet and Devina Baweja have opened a second outpost to their successful Spitalfieds restaurant called Gunpowder, this time they have headed to South East London in the new One Tower Bridge development. Set over two floors with the main restaurant on the first floor, there's also a ground floor bakery called Custard serving savouries, pastries, sandwiches from across the Indian subcontinent, as well as soft-serve custard and coffee by Ozone Coffee Roasters. The first-floor dining room features 70's inspired tiling with an exposed industrial ceiling and intimate leather booths set on smart harlequin styled flooring.
Head Chef Nirmal Save follows the same route that has made the sibling restaurant so popular, with affordable home-style dishes designed for sharing. Some of the plates you might opt for include spicy venison and vermicelli doughnut or chettinad pulled duck served with homemade oothappam. For those who are inclined more towards seafood, there's karwari soft shell crab or paturi maach, mustard fish steamed in banana leaf. There's a choice of two desserts for a sweet-toothed finale, Old Monk rum pudding or dark chocolate and cinnamon with passion fruit shrikhand.
To complement the food there's a selection wines, beers, ales and ciders as well as a small cocktail menu.
