Review on Lino
Just steps from Smithfield Market, Lino is an all day restaurant launched on the 7th November 2018 by Wright and Bell. Located in a refurbished linoleum and carpet warehouse which has retained its original brown glazed tiles, the entrance is through 12ft high double doors. Inside it has a minimalist Finish décor decorated in a palette of peach, pink and rustic green, with an industrial exposed ceiling. A clover-shaped, waxed tulipwood bar takes centre stage with antique brass fixtures and counter seating. Head for The Back Room for a more peaceful setting, where you can relax with a glass of wine or a cup of coffee and a snack, or maybe pick up something to takeaway.
Richard Falk is the Executive Chef holding sway in the open kitchen, having honed his skills in acclaimed restaurants such as The Ledbury in Notting Hill and more recently Robin Gill's The Dairy in Clapham. Operating an all day enterprise, he runs an industrious kitchen where they bake, ferment, pickle and cure onsite with a menu that is focused on low-waste dishes.
The dinner menu comprises of small and large plates which can be served as sharing dishes or a traditional three course meal. Among the small plates look for grilled mackerel, oyster mayonnaise and pickled cucumber or from the land aged beef tartare, bone marrow and smoked duck egg. Follow on with pork belly, cavolo nero, celeriac and white cabbage choucroute or a risotto of grains roasted in brown butter and winter mushrooms. To finish indulge with a dessert of warm chocolate mousse with milk ice cream or croissant ice cream with brown butter, made with the left-over breakfast homemade pastries.
The food is matched by a thoughtfully chosen wine list, together with retro cocktails given a modern twist with house ferments and botanically infused tipples.
