Review on Southside Scran
Southside Scran is a classy neighbourhood bistro located in the charming Bruntsfield area of Edinburgh, about a mile south-west of the city centre. It's the fourth outing from Michelin-stared chef Tom Kitchin, who has already established The Kitchin, Castle Terrace and Scran and Scallie.
Burns Interior Design together with Tom's wife Michaela Kitchin have created a welcoming vibe in the open plan room. Bathed in light from the large windows looking out onto the street, it centres around the open kitchen with a rotisserie grill. A brass-accented dining room with leather banquette seating taking inspiration from French bistros.
Tom has appointed his long-time lieutenant Craig McKenzie to lead the kitchen, which emphasises their nature to plate philosophy using the very best of seasonal produce, giving French cuisine a Scottish slant. The menu cruises its ways through Dexter beef tartar paired with melba toast and seafood starters like North Sea octopus carpaccio with lemon dressing. Mains promise Ayrshire pork fillet and rôtisserie leg with pineapple salsa or North Sea plaice wrapped in pancetta, mussels, garlic and parsley. You'll want to leave room for dessert, whether you've a penchant for chocolate tart served with milk ice cream or rice pudding, pumpkin, quince and salted caramel sauce.
There's a carefully compiled global wine list although Europe figures prominently and signature cocktails that change with the seasons.
