Review on Laurent at Café Royal
Located on the first floor of the Hotel Café Royal, just steps away from Piccadilly Circus, Laurent is an all day grill and sushi restaurant by French chef Laurent Tourondel, who already operates five other restaurants in New York, Miami, Hong Kong and Kazakhstan.
It looks eminently chic with a modern décor that exudes an understated elegance created by Italian architect and designer Piero Lissoni. A dark wood panelled room with a backlit marble-walled bar, the main dining room is decorated in a subdued palette of brown and grey with bronze accents. Taking centre stage is the magnificent Italian Murano glass chandelier, suspended from the ceiling down to the lobby below.
The kitchen places great emphasis on impeccable produce, selecting the very best of steaks such as Scottish Aberdeen Angus, US Creek Stone Farm and Snake River or Japanese Wagyu Kagoshima, which are then cooked on the open flame parrilla grill. Typical options on the menu include gin cured salmon sushi, fresh salmon, dill, cucumber and yuzu glaze or among the appetizers Wagyu beef carpaccio, smoked foie gras and truffle oil. When it comes to main courses enjoy Alaskan black cod paired with baby spinach and celery root purée or grilled poussin 'Diablo', vinegar, cherry peppers and tarragon. Close the show with an indulgent salted caramel sundae, salted caramel kettle popcorn and hot fudge or maybe a refreshing watermelon and London honey, lemon ricotta gelato, grapefruit and charentais.
An encyclopaedic wine list that emphasises regions of France will please wine buffs and there's also a fantastic selection of cocktails in their Ziggy's cocktail bar, inspired by one of their most famous guests, the late David Bowie.
