Review on Pitch
Pitch is the debut restaurant from former bank manager Kenny Tutt, who was crowned winner of the BBC's MasterChef by judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace in 2018. Taking its name from his parents who were market traders, it's set in his home town of Worthing in West Sussex on pedestrianised Warwick Street.
Laid out over four floors, the interiors and exteriors have been designed by Esme Callaghan, who has created an English market ambience, coupled with English heritage. The outside has an outdoor market look with paved stone flooring and a dumb waiter shop front. The main dining room is on the ground floor decorated with moss green velvet banquette seating and green botanical wallpaper, together with gold accents. On the second floor there's an elegant lounge area with a cosy marble fireplace, ideal for private parties, with the third floor occupied by the kitchen. Kenny's very popular cookery school with it's beamed ceiling and rustic décor is on the fourth floor.
Celebrating the abundance of local produce from the surrounding area, the kitchen showcases a contemporary mix of modern and classic British food. To kick start proceedings there's seasonal game terrine paired with quince, pickled vegetables and sourdough or from the sea, pan roasted scallops, chorizo, chicken butter and potato crisp. The menu then cruises its way through the likes of ox tail pie, buttered mash, seasonal greens and truffled sauce or for fish fans, turbot, malted barley oil, mushroom, salsify and monks beard. Desserts hit the button with a Valrhona Guanaja 70% chocolate torte, Harveys Ale ice cream and Malt crumb or Negroamaro poached pear, dark chocolate and winter berry coulis.
To accompany the food there's a well travelled wine list, cocktails like Pitch Bellini, homemade fresh seasonal purée and prosecco, alongside a great selection of gins, whiskies and craft beers.
