Review on Henrock at Linthwaite House

Formerly an Edwardian gentleman's residence built in 1900, nowadays Linthwaite House is a stunning country retreat set in 14 acres of enchanting gardens and private woodlands, overlooking Lake Windermere. It was the first acquisition outside of South Africa from the Leeu Collection of five-star boutique hotels, that now own five properties including one in Florence, Italy. After undergoing a £12 million pound refurbishment, they have joined forces with renowned Michelin-star chef Simon Rogan to open their gastronomic flagship restaurant called Henrock. It is named after Hen Rock, the rocky outcrop protruding from Lake Windermere that can sometimes be viewed from the hotel's terraces.

It's a very elegant restaurant with luxurious furnishings and fittings, affording guests a relaxed ambience and spectacular views of the immaculate gardens. Simon has appointed Brian Limoges to lead the kitchen brigade, and he has climbed the culinary ladder at renowned restaurants such as Quince, Birdsong, and Atelier Crenn. The restaurant is open for dinner all week and Sunday lunch, with lunch for the rest of the week and afternoon tea taken in the chic Bar & Conservatory.

First-class ingredients are sourced locally, with much of the produce coming from Simon's own farm, located just a few miles away in the Cartmel Valley. The menu features a series of small and sharing plates that take inspiration from the chefs travels around the globe. Here is a kitchen that tempts with the likes of venison carpaccio, salsify, egg yolk jam and aged Cheddar or maybe sea urchin, brioche, mustard and pear with the option of adding caviar for a supplement. Elsewhere there's a sharing dish of whole roasted Dover sole with shiso salsa verde, broth of citrus and radish or from the land you might opt for pine smoked quail, honey, quince and endive. To conclude there's a frozen salted caramel with a choice of toppings or a grapefruit and apple Pavlova.

There's an extensive wine list from esteemed vintners across the world, together with cocktails like Exton Park, Lakes Rhubarb gin, lemon and Exton Park sparkling wine.
