Review on The Laundry
The Laundry opened its doors in November 2019, situated within Walton Lodge on Coldharbour Lane in Brixton. An historic building that was built in the 1880's, it was used as a commercial steam press laundry until its closure in 2014. This gem of a neighbourhood venue, combining the virtues of an all day bistro and wine shop next to Brixton Village is the brainchild of Melanie Brown. She also runs the New Zealand Wine Cellar in Pop Brixton, having previously honed her culinary skills at The Providores, as well as Jamie Oliver's Fifteen and Vinoteca.
Laid out over two floors, the décor pays homage to the building's history with the original exposed brick and distressed plaster walls and tiled flooring. Perch on the brown leather stools at the marble topped bar, or on the duck-egg blue banquette seating. In addition there's two beautiful private dining rooms and when the weather obliges, the laundry's former delivery yard is now a lovely Parisian inspired terrace, perfect for dining al fresco.
Rattling the pans in the kitchen is Australian chef Dylan Cashman, who has produced a menu of sharing dishes using the very best of seasonal produce from trusted suppliers. Graze your way through dishes like roasted hispi cabbage, Cropwell Bishop stilton and buttermilk green apple dressing, or roasted bone marrow, oxtail jam, sourdough and citrus and from the sea cured day-boat seabass, pickled strawberry, pepper, tarragon and sunflower seeds. Desserts conjure up lemon tart paired with crème fraiche ice cream or chocolate, almond and orange torte.
To accompany the food there's a first-class wine list of some 50 bins featuring both old and new world wines. There's also 'The Cleaners Diary' their special wine collection of limited bottles curated by Gareth Birchley.
