The aptly named 28 Market Place restaurant was unveiled in January 2020 in picturesque Somerton, a Somerset market town that's packed full of old world charm. The restaurant also benefits from an on-site bakery where sourdough filled doughnuts are made daily and a wine shop with wines not found on the main wine list. It's the first venture from Ex-Soho Director, Ben Crofton who has previously managed lauded restaurant such as The French Laundry in California and The Square in Mayfair, together with his wife Vanessa who has worked at the award-winning Clementine bakery before joining Gordon Ramsay, where she and Ben met.

Housed in a lovely 17th century Grade II listed building, they have worked closely with local architects, integrating a contemporary design whilst staying sympathetic to the heritage of the venue. The dining room has a fresh, pretty green and white palette with wicker basket lampshades overhead, and hanging bunches of green foliage.

Taking helm in the kitchen is Great British Menu 2018 finalist Dan Fletcher and former Head Chef of Fenchurch restaurant at Sky Garden in London, who has also worked in Michelin-starred restaurants such as The Kitchen in Edinburgh and The Black Swan at Oldstead. His menus are dedicated to the seasonality of ingredients, serving exciting creative flavours using the finest local produce. Smoked raw Halibut, white beetroot, bonito and English caviar proceeds a main course of 50 day aged rump of beef, Long Sutton turnips, pressed potatoes and black sesame. Make sure you leave room for desserts such as the Ivy house clotted cream tart, clementine, pomegranate and lime or 70% single origin chocolate, poached pear, spiced ginger and orange ice cream.

Service is charming and knowledgeable and there's a carefully compiled wine list to accompany the food.
