David Dalzell-Piper has been at the helm of this enduring Berkshire inn, The Dundas Arms, for more than three decades, and the place has lost none of its allure over the years. It stands against a backdrop of towering trees where the River Kennet meets the Kennet & Avon Canal – a prime spot for whiling away the time with some splendid food and drink. Don't be surprised to see ducks waddling past your feet as you sit at one of the wooden tables on the jetty.
The elegant dining room conjures up the atmosphere of a French auberge, and the menu steers a true course between fashion and familiarity, providing exactly what the customers require. On offer there might be pan-fried pigeon breasts on celeriac purée with pepper and redcurrant sauce or grilled tuna with Asian coleslaw, chilli and lime dressing alongside potted shrimps, cod and chips, and calf's liver with bacon and onion gravy.
Similar food is chalked on a blackboard in the bar (anything from country pâté to summer pudding) and there are real ales on draught (try locally brewed Butts Golden Brown or Mr. Chubb's Lunchtime Bitter). Pride of place, however, goes to David Dalzell-Piper's stupendous list of around 200 high-class wines: heavyweight clarets and red burgundies are the main attraction, along with first-rate house selections.
