Review on Sagar

A reliable destination for genuine South Indian vegetarian food on frenetic King Street, Sagar keeps the punters happy with its no-frills approach, up-front flavours and rock-bottom prices. The decor is simple and clean-cut - blond-wood floors, close-packed tables and assorted ethnic artefacts on the walls.

Traditional dosas (stuffed pancakes), idlis (steamed rice dumplings) and uppathams (lentil 'pizzas') are the big sellers, but the kitchen also turns out Bombay chowpati snacks (bhel poris, dahi vada and the like) and a range of curries including vegetable kootu (with coconut, cashews and cream) and jeera aloo (potatoes with a zesty mix of cumin seeds, coriander and curry leaves).

Thalis are a good way to enjoy the whole show, and it's worth finishing with a traditional dessert such as gulab jamun or payasam (a hot pudding made with vermicelli, sugar, milk, cashews and raisins). Lunches are incredible value - even cheaper if you takeaway. Sagar West End is at 17a Percy Street, London W1.
