Review on Sumas
Longueville Manor's little sister Sumas is currently one of Jersey's most exciting and innovative restaurants, with a fairytale location to match: the restaurant sits directly above the stone-walled harbour and historic Mont Orgeuil castle, with support from colourfully decorated waterfront cottages and all manner of boats bobbing about on the water.
The dining room puts on a clean, bright modern face and it makes a perfect backdrop for Dany Lancaster's sharp, lively cooking. To begin, there's generally a tapas plate in addition to classy starters like roast local scallops on saffron risotto with Jerusalem artichoke purée and basil coulis or carpaccio of beef with horseradish pannacotta. To follow, you might find baked fillet of monkfish on bean and pancetta cassoulet with foie gras and beurre rouge or roast Gressingham duck breast with sweet potato fondant, plum jam, sesame greens and spiced confit wuntuns. The assiette of miniature desserts is a real palate-teaser; otherwise home in on hot chocolate fondant with whisky ice cream or iced pistachio parfait.
Saturday breakfasts are well worth knowing about, and the well-spread, 50-strong wine list is a tempting blend of big names and lesser-known labels.
