Review on Fish! Kitchen
Tony Allan, founder of Fish!, came up with a bright new idea when he decided to open a casual fish-and-chip café next door to Jarvis the Fishmonger, which has been doing business in Kingston since 1942. It just so happens that he owns the shop as well.
The interior is sleek and modern, with polished concrete, dark tiles and green leather banquettes helping to create something quite stylish; a glass wall divides the dining room from the shop - so customers can see what's fresh on the granite-topped slab before it's cooked.
You can eat in or takeaway from a menu that majors in beer-battered fish - cod, haddock, plaice, halibut - but also tips its hat to current tastes with grilled organic salmon and line-caught tuna. If you are sitting down, you could kick off with a plate of Jarvis's famous smoked Scottish salmon (cured in the smokehouse kilns behind the shop) or a bowl of fish soup with rouille, and finish with some ice cream. Expect a handful of new sites across the capital in coming months.
