Review on Drake's
Drakes is an imposing three-storey Queen Anne town house restaurant in the charming historic village of Ripley in Surrey. Now owned by Serina Drake the restaurant looks eminently chic with a luxurious and contemporary décor. The lounge bar is the perfect place for a pre-dinner aperitif while perusing the menu before dinner, and a delightful walled garden with terrace seating, also affords guests a relaxed ambience during summer months.
The kitchen is now in the capable hands of former sous chef Fred Clappeton, who joined the restaurant in 2012 as a demi chef de partie in pastry and quickly climbed the culinary ladder to his current position.
The kitchen shows its allegiance to high quality ingredients with known provenance, sourced both locally and regionally for modern menus that emphasis creativity and impeccable technique. Open your account with Loch Duart salmon, cucumber, crab and fennel or chicken wings, artichoke, leek and mushroom. Main courses embrace pork, puy lentils, pumpkins, celery, sherry and saffron or from the sea there's hake, potato, parsley, lemon and brown shrimp. To finish it's hard to resist the pineapple, lime, vanilla, yogurt and white chocolate or the plum tonka bean, raspberry, meringue and Armagnac.
To accompany the menus, Drake's has a carefully compiled wine list offering a fair selection of affordably priced wines with a focus on France.
