Review on Blandford Comptoir
Blandford Comptoir was launched in the summer of 2016, a delightful neighbourhood restaurant on Blandford Street in fashionable Marylebone. It's the first solo venture from Xavier Rousset who hit the headlines in 2002, when he became the youngest winner of the Ruinart UK Sommelier of the Year while he was working for Hotel du Vin. He went on to become the head sommelier at the prestigious Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons, before opening Texture and the 28° - 50° group with his business partner, chef Agnar Sverrisson.
Decked out in a palette of blue, the intimate venue is flooded with natural light from the glass panelled ceiling. Featuring marble topped tables set against banquette seating, with the smart bar seating 14 the main focus of the room. There's also a few tables outside for al fresco dining when the weather is warm.
Leading the kitchen is London born Head Chef Ben Mellor, who earned his culinary spurs at restaurants such as Savoy Hotel, Monsieur Max, McClements and Drakes before joining Xavier Rousset at 28.50 Fetter Lane, where he became Executive Chef. The menu is based around keenly sourced seasonal ingredients featuring meat, seafood, raw and vegetables that can be either ordered as sharing plates or three separate courses. From the raw section you could order the sea bream, orange and rosemary before the quail, truffle boudin and pine nut or maybe the duck breast, ravioli and fig.
As expected given Xavier's pedigree, the ever evolving wine list reads like an oenophile's paradise with a lovely selection available by the glass or carafe.
