Review on Hoppers St Christopher’s Place
Having scored a hit with Hoppers in Soho, the team behind Michelin starred restaurants Trishna and Gymkhana opened a sibling restaurant in St Christopher's Place. Located a short walk from Oxford Street, this branch has the advantage of offering diners bookings. Laid out over two floors, the interiors have been created by Katy Manolescue of Article Design Studio, taking inspiration from the late Sri Lankan award winning architect Geoffrey Bawa, whose tropical modernist movement was focused on blending the Sri Lankan landscape with architecture. Filled with plenty of lush greenery throughout, there's also private dining areas in four vaults set into the wall suitable for 6-8 guests, and further seating on their terrace when the sun shines.
In addition to the popular Hopper dishes at the Soho branch, the kitchen has also created new section called Rice & Roast featuring dishes such as black pork ribs, turmeric, cashew and fennel or from the sea banana leaf roasted bream, green mango and Madras onion sambol. There's also the option of choosing their feasting menu to be taken by the whole table, it's a good way to sample a variety of their dishes such as devilled chilli squid and jaffa lamb chops. There's just one dessert to finish on a sweet note, a love cake ice cream sandwich.
To accompany the food there's a concise wine list and signature cocktails which focus on Arrack, a Sri Lankan spirit distilled from the sap of coconut flowers and Genever, a Dutch spirit flavoured with juniper and spice.
