Review on The Betterment at The Biltmore Mayfair

Respected Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton opened his 19th restaurant in September 2019, named The Betterment it's located in prestigious Grosvenor Square, where he first made his name launching Gordon Ramsay's Maze at the Marriott in 2005. It's the flagship restaurant of The Biltmore Mayfair hotel, which has undergone a multi-million-pound redevelopment spearheaded by London-based Goodard Littlefair, the first European property within the LXR Hotels & Resorts collection.

Jason and his wife Irha chose the name of the restaurant to reflect their journey from opening Pollen Street Social in 2011 until now. The Betterment is a high-end restaurant with leather furnishings and gold and marble fittings, with a rustic wood-fire grill taking centre stage, adding a theatrical flair to proceedings.

Leading the kitchen is Executive Chef and long term colleague Paul Walsh, who was at the helm of City Social for five years, achieving an acclaimed Michelin star within seven months of opening. The restaurant is open all day for breakfast, lunch and dinner showcasing a seasonal menu of modern dishes, prepared with technical precision allowing the natural flavours of the ingredients shine through.

Amongst the starters a highlight is the crab on toast, brown crab and lemon butter or for those with a preference for meat there's pork cheek terrine with apple purée. After that, consider the rose veal cutlet from the grill served with charcuterie sauce or from the sea South Coast turbot with Morecambe Bay potted shrimp butter. Proceedings conclude in style with a hazelnut praline choux paired with coffee ganache and lemon sorbet or a bitter chocolate tart with Tahitian vanilla ice cream.

There's also The Pine Bar, a specialist whisky and cocktail bar, The Tea Lounge serving afternoon tea and the heated Terrace for all year round al fresco dining and drinking.
