Review on The Cellar
Set in a 17th century building, The Cellar is an award winning restaurant located behind Anstruther’s Scottish Fisheries Museum. Tiled floors, rough-stone walls, tables fashioned out of old sewing machines and an antique grandfather clock create a mood that is absolutely charming.
The menu changes from day to day, depending the catch, the market and the season. Fish is the business and the quality is first class. Lobster and sea trout quiche has a homespun feel, but it’s given a sophisticated twist with smoked lobster oil, likewise grilled halibut on basil mash and a global macedoine of greens, peas, pine nuts and pak choi.
There are few token alternatives for fans of animal protein (Gressingham duck and pistachio terrine or fillet of beef with wild mushrooms and Dijon mustard sauce, for example), while desserts run the gamut from warm date and ginger sponge with cinnamon ice cream to hazelnut praline parfait. The Jukes’ wine cellar is one of the finest in Scotland. The tour begins in France, and then traverses the globe in search of treasures. The restaurant was awarded a prestigious Michelin star in the 2016 edition of the Guide.
