Review on Crab & Lobster Restaurant
Fish is, of course, the big deal at this cracking Yorkshire inn, and the Crab & Lobster at Asenby has established itself as a seafood destination 'par excellence' since opening back in 1990. Ideas come from all over, so expect bright flavours in abundance: baked Asian-spiced crab is given a chilli and coconut crust, seared scallops, come with smoked paprika, cauliflower pannacotta and golden raisin vinaigrette, while halibut might be served with Kiev-style potatoes, fennel and sweetcorn chowder.
Meat eaters will also find plenty to cheer about in the shape of pigeon breast, bacon and lentil salad, confit of Yorkshire lamb with hotpot potatoes and home-pickled red cabbage or peppered loin of venison, while desserts might run to sticky date pudding or banana and praline parfait with roast bananas and chocolate bon-bons. Fish club sandwiches are the best sellers at lunchtime, there are real ales on handpump and the 60-bin wine list offers spirited drinking at fair prices.
Luxurious accommodation is available at nearby Crab Manor, an opulent Georgian house surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens; there are also two self-contained log cabins in the expansive grounds.
