Review on Dalmunzie Castle Hotel
A quintessential Highland laird's mansion (circa 1510) built in true baronial style with towers and turrets, Dalmunzie House stands on a 6,500-acre estate not far from the golf course and the ski slopes of Glenshee.
Light lunches, sandwiches and the like are served in the bar, but the kitchen pulls out all the stops for dinner in the spacious, well-appointed restaurant. The concise, daily-changing repertoire might kick off with seared pigeon breast with braised Puy lentils, plum compote and port reduction. A soup or sorbet or soup (perhaps elderflower) generally precedes main courses such as loin of venison with truffled dauphinoise, aubergine compote and blackcurrant jus or cherry tomato-crusted turbot with fennel crushed potatoes cauliflower and caper purée.
To round things off, expect desserts along the lines of vanilla pannacotta with tempura apples and caramel sauce. The wine list combs the globe in search of new surprises, and there are over 60 malt whiskies on show.
