Review on Hotel du Vin & Bistro
Located in Cheltenham's chic Montpelier district, this branch of the Hotel du Vin group is in tune with the gentrified spirit of the town. Inside, its spacious public areas are centred around a showpiece spiral staircase, and the hotel also boasts an extensive al fresco dining area as well as a trademark bistro.
The seasonal menu follows the now-familiar HDV formula. On the one hand there's a vigorous assortment of modern European dishes such as seared scallops with roasted celeriac purée and gremolata, roast rump of lamb with wilted spinach and tapenade jus, and confit of duck with pak choi. On the other, there are 'Simple Classics' like Morecambe Bay potted shrimps and char-grilled ribeye steak with frites and béarnaise sauce.
Desserts could include summer pudding, a cup of espresso ice cream or fig sorbet, while the wine list is an impressive, eclectic slate of more than 600 bins ranging from great vintages to youthful contenders.
