Review on Lumley Castle Hotel, Black Knight Restaurant
If there was ever a venue that lived up to the billing 'no ordinary hotel', it's Lumley Castle. Standing proud in the Durham landscape overlooking the River Wear for more than six centuries, it has played host to kings and princes, but now has an enviable reputation as a luxury hotel. Carved wood, tapestries, statues and chandeliers abound in the OTT Gothic-style interior, and every room is filled with historical artefacts and special touches.
Fine dining takes place in the elegant, lavishly furnished surroundings of the Black Knight Restaurant, or you can take advantage of one of the sophisticated private dining rooms. The food has a strong international flavour, offering the likes of duck and stir-fried vegetable parcels or smoked haddock, prawn and pea fishcakes ahead of grilled Wearsdale lamb chump with a Mediterranean vegetable tartlet or baked chicken breast marinated in Indian spices. A 'classical corner' promises Stilton-topped fillet steak or herb-crusted rack of lamb, while desserts are mostly old favourites.
