Review on Petit Paris
A bastion of old France in the touristy heart of Edinburgh, Petit Paris does exactly what it says in its patriotically Gallic slogan: 'Le respect de la tradition française'. The Grassmarket original stands opposite the Apex Hotel, with the Castle looming as a backdrop, and it also benefits from tables out on the terrace in fine weather.
French bourgeois cooking of the old school is the kitchen's passion, with escargots bourguignonne, bouillabaisse, coq au vin and côte de boeuf as signature dishes. Elsewhere, expect steamed mussels in Bleu d'Auvergne cheese sauce, baked saddle of rabbit with Dijon mustard sauce and gratin of asparagus with Reblochon cheese. Crème brûlée and tarte au chocolat are the desserts of choice.
The food is supported by a short, sharp list of regional French wines. at keen prices. Note that Petit Paris is closed on Mondays from October to March. A sister restaurant, Petit Paris 2, is at 17 Queensferry Street, Edinburgh EH1.
