Review on Jacobs On The Mall
A nineteenth-century Turkish baths is the highly unlikely setting for this contemporary restaurant in the heart of Cork's commercial district. The only steam these days is likely to emanate from the kitchen, where Mercy Kenton's team produce some of the sharpest and most vibrant cooking in the city.
Bold eclectic flavours point up dishes such as seared Castletownbere prawns with coconut rice, ginger and lemongrass emulsion or spiced John Dory with wilted greens, cucumber salsa and minted yoghurt. Meat eaters and vegetarians also do well with options such as free-range duck breast with roast butternut squash, pea puree and ginger jus or fried polenta with grilled flat mushrooms, walnut and parsley pesto.
Desserts range from comforting date and butterscotch pudding to voguish brandy snap cannelloni with orange risotto pudding and lemon ice cream. A few organic bottles provide added interest to the well-chosen wine list. The restaurant also has its own piano bar and private dining room.
