Review on Masa Restaurant & Wine Bar
A rather imposing 200-year-old Wesleyan Chapel is the setting for this enterprising mix of restaurant and wine bar close to the centre of Derby. New owners have kept many of the building’s intriguing decorative features, while allowing the place to take on its own special identity.
The ground floor now functions as a capacious wine bar, ideally suited for convivial daytime refreshment and sustenance. At lunch, choose from a ‘lounge menu’ that lists open sandwiches, salads (grilled chorizo and new potato with basil), pasta, risottos and the like.
Upstairs is the Gallery Restaurant, where the food is taken to another level. Starters like sautéed lamb’s sweetbreads with wild mushrooms and pecan nuts or beef tartare with roasted baby beets, orange and tarragon vinaigrette could give way to roast duck breast with sauerkraut and pineapple or pan-fried John Dory with tomato and courgette tart and tapenade. To conclude, try caramel parfait mille-feuille with roasted bananas or a trio of chocolate.
