Review on The Royal Oak
A recent facelift has done much to improve the look of this hospitable roadside pub The Royal Oak at Downton, and there have been extensive changes to the huge, well-maintained garden and play area at the back. Inside it is partly panelled, with low beams and open fires ablaze in cold weather.
Lunchtime ciabatta club sandwiches give way to more ambitious restaurant dishes such as seared scallops with chilli and cucumber butter, confit of shoulder of lamb on mint and pea mash with redcurrant and rosemary jus, or whole sea bass marinated in balsamic vinegar.
Desserts such as strawberry brûlée or mango cheesecake end meals on a high note. Real ales are supplemented by a very decent wine list (including around 15 by the glass).
