Review on The Greenwich Union
Flagship of Alastair Hook's ground-breaking Meantime Brewery, the Greenwich Union serves 'lots of lovely beer' in an unstuffy setting of flagstone floors, wood panelling and arty design work. Hook learned his skills in Munich and he offers up to eight unpasteurised draught brews (ranging from Pilsner and Kelles to Raspberry) plus a line-up of bottled beers from around the globe.
On the food front, expect a regularly changing menu of eclectic gastropub dishes based on locally sourced ingredients - including fish from Billingsgate. Bar snacks such as pan-seared squid with chorizo or spiced vegetable samosas give way to more substantial dishes like slow-cooked pork belly with coconut rice, asparagus and spinach risotto, and fillet of sea bass with potatoes, spinach, red pepper and olive salsa.
Brunch is served on Saturday, a choice of roasts is added to the menu for Sunday lunch, and the dessert list might run to rhubarb and pear crumble or vanilla pannacotta with basil fruit coulis. For drinkers who prefer the juice of the grape, there are a dozen reasonably priced wines on offer.
