Review on The Pier at Harwich
The Pier at Harwich overlooks the harbour and has wonderful views of the Stour and Orwell estuaries. They have a ship's bell which is rung to alert customers that a large ship is passing. There is a nautical feel throughout the hotel/restaurant which is owned by the Milsom family who also own the highly acclaimed Le Talbooth Restaurant, Maison Talbooth Hotel and Milsoms Hotel and Restaurant in Dedham, near Colchester. (See guide entries)
The two restaurants at The Pier, The Harbourside and The Half Penny Pier cater for every taste and every pocket, but The Harbourside Restaurant, with its splendid panoramic views, has gained a well deserved reputation as one of the country's premier seafood restaurants.
Fish is taken directly from the boats opposite; lobsters are kept in the cellar and used from the tanks. Dishes vary from the traditional such as a classic Dover sole to the modern and oriental. There is an extensive wine list centred on white wines with a particularly strong South African section.
The Pier at Harwich has been managed by Chris and Vreni Oakley for over twenty years. The Milsoms have run Le Talbooth for over fifty years! From The Mobile Food Guide point of view, it does seem that after all this time they surely know how to run some of the Country's finest establishments.
The Pier at Harwich is also featured in: Michelin Guide, Good Food Guide, AA Guide
