Review on Castle House
Situated close to Hereford Cathedral and the Left Bank Village (a swinging mix of shops, deli, brasserie, ice cream parlour and more besides), this elegant Georgian house is now an outstandingly well-run hotel. It has made a serious impact on the local scene over the years, and valiantly waves the flag for top-drawer food in Hereford.
The dimly lit restaurant overlooking Hereford Castle moat is at the heart of the enterprise, and the food is as modern as it comes. Opening the show there might be seared scallops accompanied by pea and ham risotto and langoustine tempura, while main courses pick up the theme with - say - roast halibut, crab and tarragon brandade, wild mushrooms and broad beans or fillet of Hereford beef with braised beetroots, a faggot of the blade and thyme jus. To conclude, consider Mascarpone and espresso parfait with dark chocolate ice and Marsala glaze.
The icing on the cake is an extravagant seven-course tasting menu highlighting 'the chef's latest creations'. France is the main focus of the wine list, but there is plenty of interesting stuff from elsewhere if you are prepared to delve.
