Review on Red Lion Inn
A short walk from Carsington Water (Britain's newest reservoir) on the fringes of The Peak District National Park, this well-tended seventeenth-century inn is a gem of a pub. Thankfully, there's been no tampering with the old flagstones and tiled floors or the brick walls hung with old prints, watercolours, photographs, and a motley selection of curios.
One menu is served throughout the place and it offers good-value food with a few hints of ambition, especially when it comes to blackboard specials. Otherwise, the regular menu offers the likes of 'posh' mushrooms on toast topped with Hartington Stilton, fillet of chicken in mustard sauce with chive mash, fish and chips, and Derbyshire steak and ale pie. Lamb dishes are a speciality, while desserts are things like jam roly-poly and custard or chocolate and orange truffle. Real ales are on handpump, and the wine list is a good match for the food.
