Review on Loch Ness Country House Hotel at Dunain Park
Set in extensive grounds and well-tended gardens less than a mile from the centre of Inverness , this fine Italianate mansion inhabits its own cosseted world of seductive opulence and traditional hospitality. Inside it feels comfortingly homely, with leather settees, log fires and antiques adding to the mood.
The hotel's kitchen garden provides abundant soft fruit, vegetables and herbs, which find their way into many of the dishes offered in the restaurant. Scottish themes and flavours dominate, witness Cullen skink, rack of Rogart lamb with Provençal vegetables, cottage potatoes and redcurrant jus, or a clever take on 'clapshot' involving 'turrets' of haggis, turnip, potato and Argyll smoked ham with creamed Dunsyre Blue chantilly.
Elsewhere, the dinner menu might feature diver-caught scallops with a glaze of Champagne mustard and raspberry red wine, grilled Ness salmon on spinach and watercress purée or fillet of Aberdeen Angus beef with Old Inverness whisky sauce. The extensive wine list is bolstered by a stupendous collection of more than 200 malt whiskies.
