Review on The Boat House
On the site of a former boatyard, right by St Aubin harbour, this stylish contemporary venue promises upscale island pleasures in a stunning setting of glass and timber. The finest views are from the conservatory and the expansive terraces, but the whole place is a dream.
There are also sensational vistas from the first-floor restaurant, where fresh Jersey seafood gets top billing. The modern menu might feature seared hand-dived scallops with smoked celeriac purée, grilled fillet of line-caught sea bass with sauce vierge, spring onion mash and sugar snaps, and steamed turbot with asparagus and hollandaise – not forgetting local crabs and lobsters with Jersey Royals. Meat fans could try lamb tagine with couscous, pickled lemon, yoghurt and honey, while 'very iced' summer berries with hot white chocolate sauce makes a delightful finale.
The ground-floor brasserie offers simpler dishes along the lines of fish pie and braised lamb shank. Backing up the food is an acclaimed list of around 130 wines, and it's also worth delving into the separate Captain's list of hard-to-come-by vintages. The Boat House also runs sell-out, one-day cookery courses.
